The way to reach the lake is not very easy and inaccessible during the rain seasons. You start from the Mto Wa Mbu village and walk 5 hours through a rough road that leads to the lake.
Just few meters before, you can notice Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano that produces the so-called white lava: due to its lower temperature, the crater appears covered with snow during the eruption.
It is also responsible for the high level of salinity of the lake, which is one of the most important place in the world for flamingos’ breeding.
There are not so many facilities as well as tourists: for this reason the excursion will be unique and more adventurous.
It is possible to climb the volcano in about 4 hours and we strongly advise to stay overnight nearby if you would like to see night eruptions.
Ol Doinyo Lengai is Masai’s holy mountain, better called The Mountain of God. They climb up to the open cracks of the crater to bring gifts and propitiate the god who lives inside.
