With a surface area of 69,484 km2, Lake Victoria is Africa’s largest lake and it is the source of the Nile. It is located in the north-west of Tanzania and its African name is Nyanza. Its southern part of Tanzanian area hosts the city of Mwanza, its main port.
An interesting attraction is the little park on Rubondo Island, covered by a dense forest which hosts 35 chimpanzees, almost 400 species of bir and sitatunga antelopes.
Near the city of Musoma, going south-east, there is Butiama, the birth village of the first President and “Father of the Nation” Julius K. Nyerere, who was dedicated a museum. In Butiama you can visit his house, where his wife Maria still lives.
