ZANZIBAR, PEMBA, AND MAFIA
The main islands of Tanzania are Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia.
Zanzibar is an archipelago made up of several islands and the two main ones are Unguja, with the capital Stone Town, and Pemba.
Unguja is very famous for being an island with splendid beaches and for the activities that can be done, be they water or cultural activities. In Stone Town there are many historic buildings and the famous inlaid portals, witnesses of a past of opulence. The excursions include the spice tour, the true protagonists of island life, but it is also possible to attend a concert of Taarab music, very typical of the island composed of a meeting between Arabic music and Swahili lyrics.
Spice tours are organized by all the resorts on the island, along with other excursions on land or at sea.
In the southern part of the island there is the Jozani Forest, a fantastic tropical forest of almost 2,500 hectares where the vegetation that originally covered the entire island has remained. Pemba, opposite the city of Tanga, is the second largest island in the archipelago. Less touristy than Unguja, it is the ideal place for water sports and wonderful diving. The capital of Pemba is Chake Chake. A curiosity: there is a very singular endemic animal on the island. It is called the flying fox, but it is one of the many species of bat.
Mafia Island is part of an enchanting archipelago together with Chole, Juani and Jibondo which can be reached by dhow, the characteristic Swahili boat, for cultural and naturalistic visits. The marine ecosystem surrounding this archipelago is particularly rich, so much so that it was established as a marine park in 1995. The possible diving is among the most beautiful in all of East Africa. The capital of Mafia is Kilindoni.
